The Genesee Co-op difference

At our Rochester credit union, your credit score isn’t your story. The amount of money you have isn’t your value. Regardless of what other banks or credit unions have told you, we won’t ever reduce you to a calculation. Here, your dreams are within reach.

We’re not you’re typical financial institution

We’ve got a problem with the big banks.

Most financial institutions use an incomplete story to decide your worth. You’ve got too much to offer for us to do that.

Avoiding “risk” isn’t our goal.

Everyone in Rochester should have an affordable, ethical way to save, borrow, and participate in a just economy.

Our mission challenges the status quo.

We provide quality financial services to people whose dreams and ideals have been counted out by other banks and credit unions.

What you can expect from our credit union

  • Welcome. Looking to reduce your debt? Glad you’re here. Ready to buy your first home? Come on in. No matter your goal, pull up a chair. Make yourself at home.
  • Responsibility. We’re committed to you and the people of Rochester because you’re our neighbors, and together, we make our credit union possible.
  • Community. Our futures are linked. We don’t want what’s quick and easy for some of us. We want what’s financially just for all of us.

Our building is more than brick and mortar

It’s our values. It’s our history. It’s our commitment.

We’ve been located at 395 Gregory Street in the historic building known as Weider Hall since 2005. Built in 1885 by Philip Weider as a general goods store, it has been restored as a beautiful dance hall and gathering space for community organizations.

In 2022, we purchased Weider Hall from its long-time owner who refurbished the building and have and will continue to invest in the building’s preservation and sustainability.

Weider Hall Upgrades

  • Installation of highly energy efficient geothermal heat pump system to provide heating and cooling for the entire building (Completed Summer 2024)
  • Expanded and upgraded parking lot, as required by the City of Rochester & the New York State DEC, to cap the remediated brownfield site on the property. Improvements will include electric charging stations and more parking for the Ballroom and the neighborhood (Planned - 2025)
  • New roof with solar panels (Planned - Spring 2025)
  • Elevator installation to make the second and third levels of the building accessible (Timeline TBD)

Credit union-ing

noun

  1. Borrowing and saving with a community-based financial institution run by member-owners, not shareholders.
  2. Like banking, but good for the soul.

Our Rochester credit union has a unique approach to financing:

  • We’re here for our community. Like other cooperatives, our credit union works for every member, no matter where you live or where you’ve been.
  • We don’t have shareholders. We have member-owners. You don’t just borrow and lend here. You elect our board, and we report to and advocate for you.
  • Your success is our success. Our success is Rochester’s. Our great rates directly benefit you, your loved ones, and the small businesses you care about.

How we got here

Founded in 1981 by people dissatisfied with the corporate banking world, Genesee Co-op Federal Credit Union began as a dream for a cooperative and socially responsible financial institution to serve the Rochester community. On January 19, 1982 we accepted our first deposit in a small cashbox on a folding table. Since then, our members have grown our Rochester credit union each year, hand in hand, one step toward economic justice at a time.

1982

143 members with $84,000 in deposits and $29,000 in loans.

1992

1,028 members with $2.5 million in deposits and $1.5 million in loans.

2000

1,827 members with $4.2 million in savings and $4.3 million in loans.

2007

2,498 members with 6.9 million in savings and $5.5 million in loans.

2022

The year of our 40th anniversary: over 4,000 members and $35 million in assets.
